Name Keychain STL: Make, Print and Price It

5 min readUpdated

A name keychain is the classic first product for a 3D printing shop: quick to print, cheap in material and easy to personalise. This guide shows how to make the STL in your browser, print it in one or two colours and price it.

Make the STL

  1. Open the free STL generator and choose the Name keychain template.
  2. Type the name and choose a font.
  3. Adjust the size, the base and text heights and the ring position.
  4. Rotate the 3D preview and check the estimated weight.
  5. Download the STL — or a multi-colour 3MF for two colours.

The model is generated on your device; nothing is uploaded. Downloading the name keychain as STL works on the free plan (one a day). Pro adds more fonts, more templates and the multi-colour 3MF.

Design tips

  • Keep strokes at least about twice your nozzle width (0.8 mm with a 0.4 mm nozzle); thin script fonts lose detail.
  • A base of about 3 mm and raised text of 1–1.5 mm feel solid and print fast.
  • Leave enough material around the ring hole so it does not snap.
  • Short names read better at keychain size; for long names, increase the length rather than shrinking the letters.

Printing in two colours

With a multi-material system (e.g. AMS): open the 3MF in Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer. The base and the text arrive as separate parts already assigned to filament 1 and filament 2.

With a single extruder: because the raised text starts on top of the base, one filament change is enough. In the slicer's layer preview, add a colour change (or pause) on the first layer of the text, then swap the filament when the printer stops.

What does a keychain cost?

A name keychain usually weighs only a few grams: 5 g of PLA at $0.025 per gram is $0.13 of filament. The price is driven by everything else — the ring, packaging, your time for each personalised order and marketplace fees.

That is why batching pays off: 30 names on one plate cost about $3.75 in filament and a single print setup. On the Pro Business plan the generator creates a whole list of names in one go.

Frequently asked questions

Is the keychain generator free?

Previewing is free and unlimited. With a free account you can download one name keychain STL a day; Pro allows 20 downloads a day and all templates, Pro Business is unlimited with batch generation.

Which slicers open the 3MF file?

Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer and PrusaSlicer. In Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer the base and text open assigned to separate filaments.

Can I print two colours on a single-extruder printer?

Yes. Add one colour change at the layer where the text begins.
